Your Patient Journey

From referral to recovery, here is what to expect at every step.

Telehealth Consultation with a Hematologist

Your doctor has referred you to our clinic. You will complete an initial virtual consultation with a hematologist to:

  • Review your symptoms and laboratory results
  • Confirm your eligibility for IV iron therapy
  • Determine the right iron dose for you

You will receive a secure booking link to choose your preferred date and time for this consultation.

Book Your Infusion Appointment

Once your eligibility is confirmed:

  • You receive a secure booking link
  • Choose your preferred appointment date and time
  • A confirmation email will be sent with preparation instructions

Pharmacy Confirmation Call

A pharmacist from Pharmasave will call you to:

  • Confirm your demographic details
  • Review your insurance information (if applicable)
  • IV iron will be shipped directly to the clinic, you do not need to pick up medication

Iron Infusion Visit, Short & Comfortable

On the day of your appointment:

  • Short infusion (typically 15-30 minutes)
  • Comfortable, monitored setting
  • Brief post-infusion observation period
  • Discharge home same day
  • Total clinic time: typically 60-90 minutes from check-in to finish

Follow-Up Care

After your infusion, the clinic will arrange:

  • Short follow-up within 1-2 months to assess tolerance and early symptom response
  • 6-12 month follow-up appointment to assess iron response and whether a repeat infusion is needed
  • CBC and differential blood work arranged by our clinic prior to your follow-up visit

What to Bring

BC Services Card / Health Card. If you do not have a health card, please bring a government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport).
List of current medications and allergies
Comfortable clothing with easy arm access (short sleeves or loose sleeves work best)
Free Car Parking on site — no need to worry about parking
If you feel unwell on the day, contact the clinic before attending.

What to Expect

Arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. A staff member will check you in and verify your identification and health card. Free parking is available on site.
A nurse or healthcare provider will briefly review your medical history, current medications, and allergies. You will be asked to sign a consent form confirming you understand the procedure, its benefits, and potential side effects.
A small IV line will be placed in your arm or hand. The iron infusion runs over approximately 15 minutes (Ferinject). You will be comfortably seated and monitored throughout.
After your infusion is complete, you will be observed for a short period to ensure there are no immediate reactions. Staff will check your blood pressure and wellbeing before discharge.
Most patients are discharged the same day. Total time in clinic is typically 60-90 minutes from check-in to discharge. You may drive home if you feel well, or arrange a ride if preferred.

After Your Infusion

Most patients return to their normal activities the same day.

You Can
  • Resume normal daily activities unless advised otherwise
  • Drink plenty of fluids, stay well hydrated
  • Drive home if you feel well
  • Return to work the same day if you feel able
Watch For
  • Mild symptoms may occur for 24-48 hours (headache, fatigue, flushing), this is common
  • Monitor for signs of delayed reactions (see Safety section below)
  • Contact the clinic if you have any concerns

Allergic Reactions & Side Effects

Serious allergic reactions to IV iron are rare. Patients are monitored during and after their infusion. Know what to watch for after you leave.

🟢
Mild Symptoms, Contact clinic or your family physician
  • Mild headache
  • Nausea or upset stomach
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Mild rash or itching without swelling
  • Muscle or joint aches

These are common and usually resolve within 24-48 hours.

🟡
Moderate Symptoms, Contact clinic or go to walk-in urgently
  • Worsening rash or hives
  • Chest tightness
  • Heart palpitations
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Shortness of breath (without collapse)
  • Swelling of lips or eyelids

Serious allergic reactions to IV iron are rare. You will be monitored by trained clinical staff during your infusion and for a short period afterward before discharge.
